the ins & outs

squall or no squall
i'm all for you
teeth or no teeth
there is a difference
but still
i'm on your side
i'm loving the shape of your gums
i wish you still had teeth
and yet
here you are
and can i just stop
like that
with how things are between us?

merged

let's lace our letters together
zigzagged through time
a love story told
on m&m wrappers
and photocopies
tied together with a string
plucked from the sidewalk
it had merged with

Professional development

My lizard brain on the defense
my clumsy tongue
my crude crayon drawing

We are in a cold basement
talking about race
it seems we collude
to contain the conversation to a day
here and there
those of us in white bodies
have gotten good at holding things off
turning blind eyes
quickly nodding, when necessary

My thoughts are drawn back
to myself
my lizard brain
my clumsy tongue
the muscle to pull them away and listen --
without my guilt ballooning up to block the way
or my defensiveness looming large --
the muscle is weak
unpracticed
like drawing with my left hand.

On butcher paper we are to draw
an early experience with race
my crayons don't capture
my blazing cheeks
sitting in the backseat with Nina
as my dad grips the steering wheel
and barks don't say that.
I didn't want a brown mask
I said,
because brown is ugly.
She was younger than me,
but does she remember?
What would she have drawn with crayons?
So far my lizard brain
my clumsy tongue
haven't dared to ask.

At sea

Gran Martha with the broken wheel heart
Sent across the ocean
12 years old
Short bangs and bobbed hair
You can’t mend it
Out to sea
And all alone
Bound loosely by

Legacies of cut ties

—-

The bright possibility of weather
The ways we survived
Red pepper seeds cast on the sidewalk
I’ve always dwindled

It’s what I do
I can picture looking back
On these days
Wistfully

Working groups

It was time to put to bed
Some old ideas
Who were tired
But grasping at straws
For reasons to be let on
Rambling about.

We met at the kitchen table
To discuss strategy
And cadence.
We were hoping not to loose
sight
Of a shared goal.
In the end
Everyone left their tea cups on the table
For the host to tend to the next morning
And the meetings were on going
And the tired ideas were fighting
Hard as ever
But loosing their center
Unspooling
Towards a certain decline

(Feeling good)

Feeling good
Is good
Being good
Is better

Sometimes I can’t squeeze nuance
Onto a poem
Sometimes I find half eaten chocolates
 in my bag of pretzels.
A gift from myself
To myself
I am being good
To myself
But I hide the chocolates
In the dresser
Behind the towels
So I don’t have to share
Which is not good
And does not feel good
I am clawing around in the dark
Eating dark chocolate peanut butter cups
In the hallway

The urban village

The urban village
Is stretched thin
And far
The noodles start
As a white liquid
Ladled on to a sheet
We are spread out
And crammed in
We take turns hiding
In our rooms
Waiting for silence in
The kitchen.

More mantras

The idea of chanting is appealing to me
I went to an intro to meditation
They said
If I paid $400 I could find out my mantra
And I’ve always wanted to know my mantra
But I was busy with another self help group
With mantras galore -
So many to pick from
NOTHING’S WRONG
From NOTHING I am creating the possibility of EASE
You’re in your STORY again
But NOTHING’S WRONG
I AM COMPLETE
DROP THE BANANA

Maybe I got my love of mantras from my mom
Who loves to say
Shift for yourself
and
Belly up to the bar

But no
We know it is from my dad
Who has spewed too many mantras to recount
Who speaks exclusively in mantras
Chants in basements
And never gets any better.

Free will astrology

I heard a podcast about free will
Which said we didn’t have any
And made me feel very self conscious because
Apparently everything I was doing was preordained
Just quarks bouncing against each other
Making the things I was doing
Happen to me
Cutting hastily again
Starting another project
Without finishing the last
Predictable to the stardust ions swirling inside me

Not divine as I had been told
Hand over fist
And cold bowls of pasta
Another round of calico
Not ready for the carousel
The circle up and

Closes on itself
What’s worth not being lazy about
A cheek to tend to
Round moon
The texture of the land
Is further away
And harder to keep close in the mind.
No one tells you you are doing a good job
No one sees your heart, really
But laziness ripples out
And piles up
I’m working on working harder

On thing I’ve long forgotten
I was in my body
I was getting big
I was my body
Being seen
Needing a glass of water
I was hiding behind a sheer fabric
I wanted a glass of water so bad
I willed you to offer me one
I wanted you to look away and
Have the glass of water be
On the side table within reach
I relaxed into you seeing me

Thirsty, then gulping

apron pockets

toni morrison
grace paley
alice munro
jotted notes on scraps of paper
stuck in apron pockets
built sentences
and stories
in their head
while pushing the pram to the park
or wiping the counter clean
they peeled layers off of children
and they kept digging

Cotidian

The daily life
of unfinished netflix shows
and weighing the merits of folding things
in thirds
vs.
shoving them in a drawer
of climbing the stairs
                                             again
                                    again
                           again
                  again
         again
again

when i was a child I wanted to live my life in pajamas
seamlessly slide from day to night to day to night

Wide

The tidal pools in Maine are worlds unto themselves
rich and swaying and
plentiful enough that the seven of us kids -
so used to being crowded in together
competing for resources, glances, some passing affection -
flung ourselves far and wide from each other
free to squat
wade
lounge
pluck
stare
to our hearts' contente

inheritance

My mother gave me life
Like anyone
And a sense of fiscal responsibility
She bought me braces
And the retainer I never wore
You could probably say
she gave me everything she was able to

I don't think I was a grateful child
a bit withdrawn
but she said she didn't remember it like that

I'm wrapping myself around
the idea of looking back
I'm bring myself around
to saying some sort of
thank you

plant life

He was a winter dear
I was a summer selk
He was raging against the machine
I was biking in a bathing suit
He was reading on the beach in a red sun hat
I was pointing my toes, stronger than anyone
He was even slower than you would think
I was on a mission

We were peaches
ripening in the breathless nights
We were apples in a pan
Softening to each other

milestones

Words emerge thick
a tongue wrapped around meaning
sounds that make it so
sounds that reach across cold air
a wail of willing it
not to be so.
