MUSIC LESSONS

Kind crow eyes
coax the hidden cat
into actual breath
what if you were the talent show
what if you were the copper hand
what if you were the baby
passed across curved arms
dying to make you sing?
I want to know the farmers whose land made up my day-dreamscape when I drove through Calhoun County between the years of 2010 and 2015.

What would I say to them?
"Hello, I've driven
by here for years.
Mostly in the evening,
mostly on the way to
Oxford and Memphis.

I've filled your fields
with my most internal life,
to the extent of that treeline
over there perhaps.

I saw in your cotton fields
my life, with all of its possibilities,
strewn out on each row;
dying, blooming, and dying
with each passing.

Can you walk with me over there?
I've wondered what it would be like
to stand in your fields, to meet you:
the man who has sewn and reaped
what was formerly the most sacred
part of my self."
