VISITING MY MOM’S FRIEND CHRIS

She makes me laugh like
my mom. The dove sounds. The sand.

More than memory.

SATURDAY

Calm before the storm.
On the day of the wedding

Someone is missing.

RETAIL OPTIONS

Shell World. Marine Thrift.
Sandal Outlet. Scuba Zone.

Largo Cargo. Go.

SUNSET VILLAS

Finally reading.
Chris kayaks to the island.
Asleep in the sun. catc

DRIVING TO KEY LARGO

Baby cries too loud
to listen to maternal
rage podcast. Hours pass.

MUSHROOMS

Fungi family.
Connected beneath the earth.
They keep coming up.

VACATION

My turn to be sick.
By the pool, under the palms.
I need extreme rest.

LAUNDRY

Hot wash, cold rinse twice.
Diapers, rags, clothes, sheets. Line dried
socks. Wool dryer balls.

HUMIDIFIER

It’s raining all day.
Still, we set it up for her.
Humid, in and out.

FROM MEMORY

You draw the road home.
“Freak’n awesome” your dad says.
Or so says your mom.

LOW GRADE FEVER

Kissing her hot head.
Breasts throb when she cries (or smiles).
Her pain is my pain.

ART FROM CHAOS

What are we doing?
Debris flies every which way.
Some days are like this.

MY GRANDMOTHER’S QUILT

Display in her house.
Here a layer for cold nights.
Too fragile to wash.

CLEANING

Rough tongue on silk fur.
Private world on bed or chair...
Black fuzz left behind.

24 HOURS IN THE OVEN

Cast iron chicken.
Two pans of thick cake brownies.
Trader Joe’s pizza.

MARION AT STORYTIME

Start with shrieks and eye contact.
Moms: “her smile is contagious!”
Finish with tears. Spent.

Searching and finding

Marion at the party

Maybe she’s hungry
Smiles, cries, watches, nuzzles in
Wouldn’t we like to know
