New Year's Rooftops

A home without a roof
is not a home when you can't live in it and cannot return
and in Puerto Rico / 16 months after Maria
almost a quarter of a million homes remain without roofs

What is it to be displaced in the tens of thousands
from an island devastated by category 5 hurricane winds?
What is it when an paper towel throwing clown from downtown still swears only 16 people died, and now says he won't give a dime?
more / over says la casa blanca / the money will go to fund a border wall
more than 3,000 deaths are just a drop in the bucket to a fascist regime
every time it rains it pours / from bad to worse / what is it but violence?

And it goes on but we choose action instead of being mystified / to serve community / serve as your own / claim it as yours / and it reminds you what is possible when you see hardworking working class college students / young / wild and free give their time / their hands to help Puerto Rican families know:

You are not alone / we will be a part of solutions
         not optimistic New Year's resolutions
building roofs one roof at a time / we got your back
to keep families in Puerto Rico
and bring Puerto Rican families back
                         we are back
                              and we will return.

Put the Devil into Hell

Crab, it's all sticky inside,
my hand slipped on the chop stick,
there was screaming by the stairs,
blood covered frost,
front window smashed.

I scooped the shards before the dog,
and no way to know
what the surgeons saw.

What is the gap between
seeming nice,
and knowing what one wants?
It seems a whole life can live in there,
all of our jostling,
reputation,
and quiet repudiation.

It was dumb to stir the pot then,
ignoring the seething force,
of men doing to men,
what one man does to himself.
Could not have anticipated
there would only be one choice, then
to want your tendon to be one
and to be a useful witness to anger.

ghost of friendship past

on the coldest days
I sit alone on the couch
and wonder
what happened to me
what happened to the friends
I once had
I don’t know where they went
or why
I don’t know how to cultivate friendships
how to keep in touch
even with the ones who live close by
I wonder if
they sit alone and wonder
what happened to me
the friend they once had
where I went
or why

inheritance

My mother gave me life
Like anyone
And a sense of fiscal responsibility
She bought me braces
And the retainer I never wore
You could probably say
she gave me everything she was able to

I don't think I was a grateful child
a bit withdrawn
but she said she didn't remember it like that

I'm wrapping myself around
the idea of looking back
I'm bring myself around
to saying some sort of
thank you

Fuck if I know

In the middle of the web
at the edge of this life
we've built a house
Let's paint the house silver
Let it reflect the sunsets
tearing up the skies
over the receding tide

So now what?

Fabuloso

I love the way my clean house sounds.
