If I Have a Son

I wonder how long

It will take

Before I feel compelled to tell him, over and over

That he is human, sensitive and feeling, with a beautiful heart that opens and aches

Before someone tells him to swallow his tears

And how many tears I will cry

For the ones he holds inside
